Provisioning list

Provisioning for crossing the Pacific Ocean from Hawaii to Tahiti

Here is the provisioning list I put together for 2 people for crossing the Pacific Ocean from Hawaii to Tahiti. It has 6+ months worth of ‘calories’ for 2 people with some items provisioned for 12 months. We eat low carb/keto on the boat so you will notice a disctinct lack of carb heavy provisions with a couple of exceptions for passage foods. Feel free to add flower, rice, pasta, etc to the list below if needed.

The links below are Amazon affiliate links where possible. I bought the majority of the provisions there, and some items at Costco, Down to Earth (local health food store in Hawaii), and Nespresso. If you don’t have an Amazon Prime account, you can sign up for one and get free shipping on all the canned butter you can eat: Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial

Kombucha brewing:

Make sure you have one or more fermentation jars: 1 Gallon Glass Kombucha Jar – Home Brewing and Fermenting Kit with Cheesecloth Filter, Rubber Band and Plastic Lid – By Kitchentoolz

Black tea, 500 bags: Newman’s OwnOrganics Royal Tea, Organic Black Tea, 100 Individually Wrapped Tea Bags, 7.1 Ounce (Pack of 5)

Organic cane sugar, 20 lbs: Wholesome Sweeteners Organic Cane Sugar, 10 Pound although I usually get mine from Costco if there is one around.

Coffee filters for covering the fermentation jar, 400: Melitta Basket Coffee Filters Natural Brown Unbleached 100 Count

Breakfast:

We both drink Bulletproof Coffee for breakfast. Octavia has hers with Butter (or Ghee) and Brain Octane oil. Sometimes with Cocoa powder. Petter has his with Cacao butter, Brain Octane, and foamed Coconut milk in a decadent latte. Fat never tasted so good!

Bulletproof Coffee, 10 packs: Bulletproof Ground Coffee 12oz (Pack of 2)

Nespresso Pods, Dulcao de Brazil, 500 count. Available on Nespresso.com and Amazon: Nespresso OriginalLine: Dulsao Do Brasil

Brain Octane, 3x32oz: Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil, Reliable and Quick Source of Energy (32 Ounces)

Coconut Dream Enriched Vanilla Coconut Milk, 120 count. COCONUT DREAM Enriched Vanilla Coconut Drink, 32 Fluid Ounce (Pack of 12). I actually bought those at the local health store, Down to Earth, but Amazon now carries it under Prime shipping. I wish I had known that, it was slightly cheaper on Amazon. Alternative: Unsweetened Vanilla Almond milk, Costco.

Coconut milk, powder, 2×1 lbs: Healthworks Coconut Milk Powder Organic (Dairy Free), 1lb

Cocoa powder, 2×1 lbs: Viva Naturals 1 Best Selling Certified Organic Cacao Powder from Superior Criollo Beans, 1 LB Bag

Cacao butter: 2x2lbs: Terrasoul Superfoods Organic Cacao Butter (2 Pounds)

Ghee, 4 jars: 2x Vanilla Bean Grass-Fed Ghee Butter by 4th & Heart, 9 Ounce, Pasture Raised, Non-GMO, Lactose Free, Certified Paleo and 2x Original Grass-Fed Ghee Butter by 4th & Heart, 9 Ounce, Pasture Raised, Non-GMO, Lactose Free, Certified Paleo

Unsalted Grass-Fed Butter, 20 packs. I prefer the taste of Anchor butter but Kerrygold also works. Both can be found at Down to Earth or Amazon carries Anchor Butter New Zealand, Unsalted Case of 20, 8oz Packs

Cereal (for passage only): Special K Red Berry or Original. Red Berry went in and out of stock on Amazon, so I ended up buying it at Costco but you can also get Special K Cereal, Original, 18-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 3).

Lunch

Petter usually has a Chia seed pudding with Vanilla Protein powder. He is obviously a vanilla fiend, and can’t wait to get to Tahaa and visit the vanilla farms. Octavia has two cans of sardines with a leaf or two of salad if she can find it, and a squirt of lemon juice.

Chia seeds, 10x2lbs bags: Viva Naturals – Raw Organic Chia Seeds, 2 lb Bag

Grass-fed Whey Vanilla Protein Powder, 10 lbs: Levels 2LB Vanilla Bean 100% Grass Fed Whey Protein, Undenatured, No GMOs is my favorite so far. Terra Whey is also good, but more expensive. It makes a difference when you buy 10 lbs…

Wild Planet Sardines in Olive Oil, 50x6pack at Costco (best deal) or Amazon carries them in 12 packs : Wild Planet, Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Lightly Smoked, 4.4 Ounce Tin (Pack of 12). I started eating those for lunch after listening to a Tim Ferris podcast with Dom D’Agostino and love them. They are the perfect keto food, sustainably caught, and pack lots of protein, healthy fats, calcium, and omega 3’s.

Dinner

Bega Canned Cheese, 36 can pack: One Case of Bega Cheese – 36 cans . This cheese is mild in flavor, with a cheddar like consistency. It tastes a bit like the Laughing Cow spreadable cheese, although it is harder. Has salt added as part of the canning process. Tastes great on a Wasa cracker.

Canned Butter, 30 cans: Red Feather Real Pure Canned Butter (12 Cans/Half Case). This butter is grass fed (which is important to us) and comes from New Zealand. I continue to be amazed at Amazon Prime shipping all this heavy canned stuff for free to Hawaii…

Wasa crackers, 6×12 packs: 4x Wasa Multi Grain Crispbread, 9.7 Ounce (Pack of 12) and 2x Wasa Multi Grain Crispbread, 9.7 Ounce (Pack of 12) . Maybe it’s Petter’s Norwegian heritage but we love this stuff! And it keeps forever in storage, no need to worry about moldy bread. It also has a low carb content so we can have one or two crackers a day even when we’re not on passage.

Kraft Mac and Cheese, 2x 12 boxes (passage only): Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Dinner, Original Flavor, Star Wars Shapes, 5.5 Ounce Box (Pack of 12 Boxes) or Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Dinner, Three Cheese, 7.25 Ounce Box (Pack of 8 Boxes). This is a carbolicious food which we eat only during passages. We tried other brands, like Annie’s, but if we’re going to be bad we might as well go all the way. Seriously though, it’s the only type that will settle down in our tummy with no extra acidity when on a rough crossing. You can get those for a good price at Costco as well, which is what we did. Although they did not have the Star Wars shapes there…

Canned Salmon, 12 cans: Wild Planet, Alaska Pink Salmon, Boneless & Skinless, 6 Ounce (Pack of 12) . You can also get those from Costco, either Kirkland brand or Wild Planet for a better price than Amazon. I prefer Wild Planet because they have a sustainability pledge for how they catch their fish, with no by-catch but you do pay a premium for that. These cans make a great appetizer to bring to a sundowner when mixed with sour cream or cream cheese – you will be the life of the food party unless your husband eats it on the way there, which totally happened.

Canned Tuna, 60 cans: Genova, Yellowfin Tuna in Pure Olive Oil, 5-Ounce (Pack of 24) or Wild Planet, Wild Albacore Tuna, 5 Ounce Can (Pack of 12).  I prefer the Genova olive oil canned one but Wild Planet works as well. You can also get these from Costco, about the same price.

Canned Chicken Breast, 18 cans: Kirkland Signature Premium Chunk Chicken Breast Packed in Water, 12.5 Ounce, 6 Count . These are cheaper to get from Costco but I am including an Amazon link for reference. I haven’t tried the other online brands yet.

SPAM, 32 cans: SPAM 25% Less Sodium, 12-Ounce Cans (Pack of 6). These are also cheaper to get from Costco if you have one around.

Powdered sour cream: Hoosier Hill Farm Sour Cream Powder, 1 Pound

We also provision with fresh foods: 12 1 lb packs of Bacon (stored in the freezer), 30 NY steaks (24 stored in the freezer, 6 in the fridge), 20 packs of fresh Butter (Anchor or Kerrygold, stored in the freezer and fridge), 14 double-packs of sliced Costco Swiss cheese (42 slices per double pack, stored in the fridge), 14 double-packs of Costco Signature Extra Lean Ham (48 slices/double pack, stored in the fridge), and 12 loaves of bread for the passage (also from Costco).

We add avocados and papayas as much as we can carry in our two fruit & veggie hammocks.

Snacks

Raw Almonds, 18 lbs: Terrasoul Superfoods Raw Unpasteurized Organic Almonds (Sproutable), 2 lbs or Natural California Raw Almonds, 4 lb. Costco also has good deals on Raw Almonds, conventional and organic.

Cashews, 2.5 lbs: I get those from Costco for the best price, but you can also find them online: Signature’s Cashews, 40 Ounce

Macademia nuts, 2 lbs: The Costcos in Hawaii have good deals on various types of Macademia nuts. Unless local, I would probably not get it online.

Rx Bar protein bars, 24 bars: 1x RXBAR Whole Food Protein Bar, Chocolate Sea Salt, 1.83 Ounce (Pack of 12) and 1x RX Bar Protein Bar, Coconut Chocolate, 22 Ounce . I love these bars but they are quite expensive per calorie so I am using them as a treat.

Vienna Sausages, 18 cans: Armour Vienna Sausage, Original, 4.6 Ounce, 6 Count . So these might not be the most glamorous snacks to bring to a sundowner, but they are super easy and cheap so we always carry some. They look and taste much better if you can microwave them for a minute or two. Also available at Costco.

Nutella, 8 large jars: Nutella Hazelnut Spread, 33.5 oz each, 2 Count . Also available at Costco. Passage food only. Since sugar is a super-cheap food and you get a lot of calories for your buck, we also keep those in the Bilge ‘just in case’. We still have 4 jars from 2009 from a Costco in Southern California. We opened one in our last overnight passage to Maui and Petter is not dead yet.

Almond butter, 2 large jars: Kirkland Signature – Creamy Almond Butter, 27 Ounce – 2 Jars . Also available at Costco.

Crackers, 4 packs: Mary’s Gone Crackers Super Seed Everything, 5.5 Ounce . Costco also has a large variety at great prices. Mary’s is more expensive, but can be used as a low carb cracker.

Cookies, Banana bread, Biscotti’s – go Nuts at Costco or your local store. Passage food only 🙂

For Passages

We usually ‘standardize’ our lunches and dinner to ham, cheese and butter sandwitches which are super simple to make & eat in ANY seaway and Mac & Cheese if we want/need something warm. For snacks, we have butter, almonds, cashews, macadamia nuts, Rx protein bars, cookies, Nutella, almond butter.

If the weather is good and the seas calm, we might attempt bacon or steak.

Spices and oils

Coconut oil, 1 gallon: Nutiva Organic, Steam Refined Coconut Oil from non-GMO, Sustainably Farmed Coconuts, 1 Gallon

Olive oil, 3 L: Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil or 2x Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 68 Fl Oz which you can also get from Costco. I like the can packaging which tends to last longer in the bilge.

Avocado oil, 1 L: La Tourangelle, Avocado Oil, 16.9 Fl. Oz.

Sesame oil, 1L: La Tourangelle, Toasted Sesame Oil, 16.9 Fluid Ounce

Sesame seeds, 4 lbs: Terrasoul Superfoods Raw Organic Sesame Seeds (Unhulled), 2 Pounds

Soy sauce, 2 L: San-J Tamari Gluten Free Soy Sauce, Non GMO Black Label, 64 Ounce

Himalayan Pink Salt, 4 lbs: The Spice Lab Pink Himalayan Salt

Balsamic Vinegar, 1 bottle: Colavita Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, 17 Ounce

White Vinegar, 1 gallon: Heinz Distilled White Vinegar, 1 gallon . Probably better to get from your local store. I got mine at Costco.

Kara Coconut Cream, 15 l: 15 x Kara UHT Coconut Cream (33.8 Oz./1000ml) . I prefer the 500 ml packaging because you don’t have to worry about it going bad once you open it but it’s hard to find on Amazon. I found mine at the local health store. This stuff is crazy good in Poisson Cru.

Ketchup (sugar free), 13oz 6 pack: Kara UHT Coconut Cream (33.8 Oz./1000ml)

Mustard, 2 pack: French’s Classic 100% Natural Yellow Mustard Pack of 2 30 oz Bottles

Mayo, 2 pack: Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise, Squeeze – 20 oz

Grass-fed Ghee: 1x Himalayan Pink Salt Grass-Fed Ghee Butter by 4th & Heart, 9 Ounce, Pasture Raised and 1x Salted White Truffle Grass-Fed Ghee Butter by 4th & Heart, 9 Ounce,Pasture Raised . This is in addition to the Ghee I use for breakfast Bulletproof Coffee goodness.

Cooking oil spray: OneStopPaleoShop – Paleo Keto Cooking Sprays Bundle (3 Pack Variety) – Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Spray, Chosen Foods Coconut Oil Spray, 4th & Heart Ghee Oil SprayThis is a super good find for your healthy cooking oils. I use Ghee for cooking steak and meats in general, and the Avocado and Coconut sprays for sautéing veggies.

Lemon juice, 2x 1.5L: ReaLemon 100% Lemon Juice – 2/48 oz. btls. by ReaLemon

Mio Water flavor, 20 packs: MiO Liquid Water Enhancer, Orange Tangerine, 1.62 Ounce

supplements and Meds

I am very particular about my supplementation, especially when it comes to the brands I choose. You can probably get better deals if you buy more generic stuff. The brands below are the ones I use and recommend based on my experience and months of research. I don’t necessarily take all the supplements below every day, it really depends on what I ate that day.

Vitamin C, 2 lbs powder: Nutricost Pure Ascorbic Acid Powder

Vitamin B Complex: Life Extension Bio-Active Complet B-Complex, 60 Vegetarian Capsules

Magnesium, 2x: Life Extension Magnesium 500mg, 100 Vegetarian Capsules

Calcium w/ K2: Life Extension Bone Restore with Vitamin K2, 120 Capsules

Krill Oil, 2x: Jarrow Formulas Krill Oil, 60 Softgels

Coconut charcoal: Activated Coconut Charcoal Capsules

Aspirin: Bottled Aspirin 1000/bottle (NSAID) 325 mg. each

Aleve: Aleve Soft Grip Arthritis Cap – 320 Tablets

Allergy meds: Benadryl Ultratab Antihistamine Allergy Medicine Tablets, 100 count . These are great for mosquito/insect bites too.

Miscelanious

Paper Towels: 2x Sparkle Paper Towels, 24 Giant Plus Paper Towel Rolls, Pick-A-Size, White . You can never have too many paper towels, so if we are in the US I usually keep buying those before we leave until there is no more space to store them. Paper goods tend to be expensive and/or hard to find in Mexico and the South Pacific. This particular brand/deal is cheaper than the Costco giant pack and good quality.

Toilet Paper: 2x Cottonelle Ultra ComfortCare Big Roll Toilet Paper, Bath Tissue, 12 Toilet Paper Rolls . Our Team toilets don’t care much about how thick the TP is, so any brand is safe but this is where you will want to consult your head oracle for a preferred brand.

Toothpaste: 2x Crest 3D White Whitening Toothpaste, Radiant Mint, 3.5 oz, Pack of 2 . Did you know that toothpaste can go bad? Neither did we, until we opened a Crest tube that went from Seattle to California to Mexico and back to California. So we try not to over-do it, since people brush their teeth everywhere.

Deodorant, 3 packs each: This is a pretty personal choice based on your favorite scents. Here are the ones we got: Old Spice Red Zone Collection Aqua Reef Scent Men’s Deodorant 3 Ounce (Pack of 3) and Nivea for Women Deodorant Roll On and maybe Secret Scent Expressions Cocoa Butter Kiss Scent .

Body Soap: Also a very personal choice. Soap is plentiful and cheap around the world. We usually get some extra Olay Body Wash with Vitamin E, 16 Fl Oz, 2 Count or equivalent from Costco. I also like to sample the local stuff – French Polynesia has the European versions of body products, which have fun new smells and ingredients.

Shampoo: Same comment as Body Soap. I like to get a couple of extra OGX Weightless Hydration Coconut Water Shampoo.

Conditioner: I’m a bit more particular about conditioner, and I like 2x Ion Color Defense Intense Moisture Conditioner, 20oz .

Sunscreen: 4x Hawaiian Tropic Sunscreen Silk Hydration Moisturizing Broad Spectrum Sun Care Sunscreen Lotion – SPF 30, 6 Ounce, 2x Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Weightless Sun Care Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30, 5.1 Ounce, 2x Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen, Sensitive SPF 30+, 5-Ounce, and 3x La Roche-Posay Anthelios 50 Mineral Sunscreen Tinted for Face

Earplugs: 10x Macks Pillow Soft Silicone Earplugs Value Pack, 6 Pairs . These are great for sleeping and passage making.
